History:
In 1928 the Biology teacher dr. Frido Schmidt startet the association "Tiergartenverein Stralsund". All ready the next year the association had 250 members and it opend a small enclosure for deer. 1940 the first staff was hired, but due to World War 2 it had to close 8th march 1944. After the 2nd World War the citizens longed for an animal park in the countryside. 1959 they finally could convinced the city council and the Stralsund Zoo was founded. The goal was first called "game reserve without external enclosure". With much enthusiasm and support more animals could be taken outside of the target position, so that the city had to fence in the zoo in 1964 for safety for visitors. After the first enclosures were built in the northwestern part of the city forest, others were added in the meantime towards Grünhufer Bogen. 1969 a long desired supply kiosk was built. 22 years after its founding, the city council declared the zoo Stralsund as a an independent urban facility. Money, materials and labor made possible the continuous development. In 1974 the entrance house was built, with the entrance beeing payed as "Cashier of trust" .Between a small sum of money buttons also often were found and the zoo could not be obtained in this way . The zoo manager Hartmut Olejnik became increasingly involved for more appeal through outreach and cultural events, and for a profile of the zoo as an educational facility. The first festive event took place in 1979. This had found so much favor in the population that has been an annual tradition of the festivities. Since the 1960s the zoo als has exotic animals like antilopes, llamas and pygmy goats. Today more than 50% of the shown animals are lifestock

After paying the entrance fee we se donkeys and then go to the right we se Bactrian camels as well as wallabies. Following the road we look at an old windmill and at the bees we turn left and then go straight forward to see som aviarys and cattle like the wisent and the Hungarian grey cattle. Behind them we are having an enclosure for birds of prey and wolfes. Then turning right at the duck pond we soon se a vivarium with fish and reptiles, as well as common marmosets. Passing the Parma wallaby we have at the right an old farm with a petting zoo. Following we see the chimpanzee and the cotton-top tamarin. Across we find the bell deer and lions. In this are we also find other carnivores like bears and raccoons. At the enclosures for red deer and fallow deer we turn left and walk towards a lake with pelicans. Turning left once more we meet different sheep and goats. Following are some small felines like the lynx and ocelot. Here we turn right to look at the bison and pot-bellied pigs.
